Captioning Guidelines for Video Media
When Captions Are Not Required:
- Captions are not mandatory for non-public videos used in class or streamed via Canvas to a known audience—unless an accommodation is requested.
If Captions Are Required:
- Instructors must submit accommodation requests at least 5 business days before showing or distributing the multimedia.
- The captioned version must be available at the same time the multimedia is shown or distributed.
- If simultaneous access isn’t possible, the multimedia must not be used unless a fully accessible alternative is provided.
- If a request was not made in advance and captions are not available at the time of viewing, they must be provided within 3 business days of the screening.
Captioning Your Own Videos
